January 12-14, 2018
Forrest Hills Mountain Resort and Conference Center
The purpose of the 2018 UGA Social Justice Retreat is to create a safe space for undergraduate students of all backgrounds to explore issues of diversity, identity, and inclusion, and how these concepts show up in large and small ways. This two-and-a-half-day retreat is grounded in both theory and research. As a participant (Social Justice Scholar), you will be challenged to understand your lived experience as the grounds for developing critical perspectives and actions directed toward social change (Adams, Bell, & Griffin, 2007). The hope is that through this retreat, you will begin to understand how issues of equity and inclusion show up in our lives and on campus, ultimately resulting in a positive influence towards UGA’s campus climate. All Social Justice Scholars are placed into small groups with two facilitators (Social Justice Fellows) to explore these issues deeper as a community.
How will you grow as a result of participating?
As a Social Justice Scholar, you will:
• Develop a personal understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion and your role in advocating for a socially just world;
• Be given the space to explore your personal social identities
• Explore the principles of allyship and agency in order to develop strategies to create positive change within your communities.
Students will meet on campus at the Tate Student Center at 3pm on Friday, January 12. Buses will depart at 4pm and will arrive at conference center at 6:00pm. We will return to UGA by 6PM on Sunday, January 14. The Forrest Hills Mountain Resort and Conference Center is located in Dahlonega, GA in the beautiful mountains of north Georgia.
